Columban Schools Prize Presented to Marie

May 14, 2025

Marie Gillespie of St Columba’s College, Stranorlar in Co Donegal was awarded third place in this year’s Columban Schools Media Competition in the images section.

Her entry, which was titled, ‘Building Hope Peace by Piece’, is a very timely message for our strife-riven world.

“I am overjoyed and honoured to receive this award. My piece shows the struggles in different communities,” Marie said on hearing the news that she was a 2025 prize winner.

Columban missionary Fr Oliver McCrossan travelled to St Columba’s College, Stranorlar to present Marie with her prize. He was welcomed to the school by teacher, Mairead Deeney.

The theme of this year’s Columban competition was: ‘Jubilee: Pilgrims of Hope.’ The competition attracted a record 272 entries across Britain and Ireland, the highest number in the eight years the Columbans have run the competition.

Young people 13-18 years were asked to produce a piece of writing or image that highlighted a community or groups bringing hope in the world in this Jubilee Year, making a difference locally, nationally or globally.
