The Columban Way/Turas Columbanus pilgrim walk takes off on Saturday 17th August 2024 from the car park at the historic ecclesiastical site of St Mullins in Co Carlow and continues all the way to Bangor, Co Down.
This pilgrim journey of discovery, following in the footsteps of the inspirational 6th century monk, St Columbanus, is modelled on the renowned Camino de Santiago.
It features a tapestry of historical sites set amid the landscapes of early Christian Ireland. Passing through 42 locations across Ireland over a period of 27 days, it culminates in Bangor, Co Down on 21st September 2024, which is World Day of Peace.
Bishop Denis Nulty of Kildare & Leighlin will join the walk from St Mullins to Borris, Co Carlow and will give his blessing to all who take part in the journey.
The purpose of the walk is to establish the Columban Way as a viable walking route across the Island of Ireland, where people can experience the cultural and spiritual heritage of Ireland, along with its biodiversity.
Covering some 570km, this transformative walk is a time for engaging with local communities and inviting them to be part of the journey. It also promises time and space for quiet reflection through some of Ireland’s most picturesque landscapes.
Given the current situation of Conflict in Europe and across the Middle East, the walk will focus on people’s longing for peace, healing and wellbeing.
